O-rings require back-ups for both static and dynamic sealing applications. If pressure is applied on one side, one back-up is needed on the opposite side. If pressure is applied on both sides, two back-ups are required, one for each side.

Ultra-High Pressure Back-up Rings

Positively activated back-up rings are designed to prevent extrusion and accommodate cylinder tube expansion under ultra-high pressures. They bridge the radial gap between the piston and bore as pressure increases, sliding along their angle to close metal gland clearance gaps.

External Back-up Ring

Positively activated back-up ring backing up on triangular faces to prevent external seal extrusion.

Leading Manufacturer of Industrial Equipment

Polyurethane 90

Reason: Polyurethane 90 (Shore 90A) offers excellent extrusion resistance due to its high hardness, exceptional tensile strength (up to 6,000 psi), and toughness. Its abrasion resistance and low compression set make it ideal for dynamic, high-pressure applications like hydraulic seals.

  • Best Use: High-pressure hydraulics, heavy-duty seals.

HNBR 90

Reason: Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) at 90 Shore A combines high hardness with improved cross-linking from hydrogenation, enhancing tensile strength (around 3,000–4,000 psi) and resistance to deformation under pressure. It outperforms standard NBR due to its superior molecular stability.

Best Use: Oil and gas, high-pressure automotive seals.
